In 2024, the Philippines had fully embraced more Original Pilipino Music (OPM). From the so-called nation’s girl group BINI “lockdown” for almost a year to the rise of artists like Maki, Dionela and Cup of Joe, alongside established industry icons and indie stars, last year marked a breakthrough for Filipino music. And it shows.

Recently, the Philippines emerged as a standout market in premium streaming growth for local songs among non-English-speaking countries, according to Luminate’s latest year-end report.

The country recorded a notable gain of +3.32 in local song streaming, leading other nations in embracing homegrown music.

Luminate’s data highlights a divergence in trends between English-speaking and non-English-speaking markets. In English-speaking countries, the share of local content is declining, with international imports gaining traction.

Conversely, non-English-speaking markets, like the Philippines, show a stronger preference for local content.

Streaming of international hits from the UK, US and South Korea saw some declines in the Philippines in 2024. According to the reports, UK songs experienced a drop of -0.91, while US and South Korean songs decreased by -0.75 and -0.63, respectively.

Additionally, the “Cruel Summer” singer was also named by Billboard just recently as the top artist of the 21st century chart. Her being ranked no. 1 from 2000 until now was because of her record-breaking hits and albums that peaked greatly at Billboard 200 and Hot 100 charts. 

Audience data also revealed that music remains a favorite leisure activity in the US, with music documentaries providing new avenues for monetization for rights owners and investors.
